Antony Mvunde Ensuring environmental sustainability and resolving local conflicts

In a move aimed at ensuring environmental sustainability and resolving local conflicts, Minister for Minerals, Anthony Mavunde (MP), has ordered the immediate suspension of mining operations by G & I Tech Mining Company Ltd on the Zila River in Ifumbo Village, Chunya District. 

The suspension will remain in effect throughout the rainy season, pending a thorough environmental impact assessment.

Mavunde made the announcement during his visit to the area on December 30, 2024, where he toured the mining site that had been the center of escalating tensions between local residents and investors. 

The dispute was triggered by the destruction of investor property after the mining site was invaded by the villagers, resulting in significant damage and growing unrest.

"We have visited both the mining site and the surrounding areas, and it’s clear that immediate action is needed," said Mavunde. 

"It is the clear directive of President Dr. Samia S. Hassan that economic activities, particularly mining, should be carried out peacefully, without causing harm to the environment or local communities. I’ve listened to the concerns of the community about the environmental degradation of Zila River, and the government is committed to taking the necessary steps to protect it," he added.

Mavunde revealed that a team of environmental experts, together with regional specialists and community representatives, will be formed to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the mining activities' impact on the river. 

The goal is to determine whether mining operations can resume safely, without compromising the delicate ecosystem of Zila River.

"I urge all citizens to maintain peace and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. We strongly condemn the destruction of the investor’s property," Mavunde emphasized. "Let us work together to find solutions that benefit both the community and the environment."

The intervention has been widely welcomed by local leaders. Chunya District Commissioner, Hon. Mbarak Batenga, expressed his gratitude for the Minister’s visit, noting that the government’s proactive approach is a step toward a lasting resolution of the conflict. 

"This visit has brought hope for a peaceful and sustainable solution to the issues between the investor and the community. We will continue to enforce laws and regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of the area," he said.

On behalf of the community, Member of Parliament for Chunya, Hon. Masache Kasaka, thanked the government for addressing the concerns of the villagers. 

He also reiterated the importance of protecting Zila River, which serves as a crucial water source for the district. 

"Our priority is the protection of Zila River, as it sustains the livelihoods of many in our community," Kasaka said.

Mbeya Regional Commissioner, Hon. Juma Zuberi Homera, also commended Minister Mavunde’s swift action, assuring that the regional government would fully support the suspension of mining activities until the environmental assessment is completed and recommendations are made.

This collaborative approach signals a commitment to striking a balance between economic development and environmental protection, ensuring that both the investor and the community can coexist peacefully for the long term.

Catholic church supports tax payment for national development

The Archbishop of Dar es Salaam, Jude Thaddeus Ruwa'ichi, has reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to working alongside the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to encourage citizens to pay their taxes, emphasizing that taxes are crucial for the country's development.

Archbishop Ruwa'ichi made this statement during a visit by TRA Commissioner General, Yusuph Juma Mwenda, to his home in Dar es Salaam. 

The visit was part of a broader initiative to thank taxpayers for their contributions.

"Paying taxes is an essential responsibility for every citizen, and it plays a key role in the development of our nation," said Archbishop Ruwa'ichi. 

"I am pleased with how the current tax system is operating and the strong relationship between the TRA and the people," he added.

The Archbishop assured that the Church would continue encouraging people to understand the importance of paying taxes for their own development.

"I commend TRA for its fairness in tax collection. You ensure that everyone is treated equally, and that is something we fully support," he said.

He also praised TRA’s approach to collecting taxes based on people's ability to pay, ensuring that the revenue benefits all citizens, regardless of their background. 

Archbishop Ruwa'ichi promised the Church’s continued support in these efforts.

TRA Commissioner General Mwenda expressed gratitude to Archbishop Ruwa'ichi for his role in promoting tax compliance. He also highlighted the contribution of Catholic institutions, especially in education and healthcare, to tax revenue.

"December is the month we dedicate to thanking taxpayers, and we appreciate the role of Catholic institutions in supporting tax collection," said Mwenda. 

"At times, these institutions are granted tax exemptions per the law," he added.

Mwenda praised the Archbishop’s commitment to raising awareness about taxes.

"You’ve been a strong advocate for tax issues, and we are grateful for the partnership we’ve built with Church institutions. We hope you continue to support us in 2025," he said.

The Commissioner General also emphasized that paying taxes is a patriotic act, as tax revenue supports the development of education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

"Religious institutions have a significant role in this effort, and we will continue working together to ensure fair tax collection, making sure that no one is treated unfairly," Mwenda concluded.

TRA remains dedicated to helping citizens willingly fulfill their tax obligations, contributing to the nation’s growth and prosperity.

MP Mavunde and Dodoma legends visit Isanga central prison

Member of Parliament for Dodoma Urban, Hon. Anthony Mavunde, together with members of the development group 'Dodoma Legends,' made a significant visit to Isanga Central Prison in Dodoma on December 28, 2024.

 The group was warmly welcomed by Commissioner of Law and Prison Operations (CP) Nicodemus Tenga, who represented the Commissioner General of Prisons (CGP), Jeremiah Katungu.

The visit aimed to enhance the welfare of inmates and strengthen collaboration between the community and the Tanzania Prisons Service.

 During the visit, Hon. Mavunde and Dodoma Legends presented various donations, which were received with gratitude by CP Tenga. 

The items are intended to support the daily needs of inmates and detainees at the facility. CP Tenga commended the gesture, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in prisoner rehabilitation.

 He described the visit and contributions as a model example of how society can positively engage with correctional institutions to support inmates in their journey towards reformation.

Hon. Mavunde expressed his appreciation for the efforts of the Dodoma Legends group, acknowledging their commitment to fostering positive relationships with the prison authorities.

 He praised their initiative to provide assistance to inmates and highlighted their remarkable work in renovating the women’s prison kitchen. 

This project, he said, demonstrates their dedication to improving the living conditions of women inmates and restoring dignity to those in custody. He urged the group to continue such initiatives, emphasizing their long-term impact on the lives of inmates.

Beyond donations and renovations, Mavunde took the opportunity to inspect the prison’s progress in adopting clean energy solutions for cooking. 

The government had recently issued a directive to transition to the use of clean and sustainable energy in correctional facilities, as part of broader efforts to promote environmental conservation and improve health standards.

  Mavunde commended the Tanzania Prisons Service for swiftly implementing this directive. He particularly acknowledged their commitment to aligning with President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan’s vision of a sustainable and environmentally conscious Tanzania.

The visit concluded with a call for continued collaboration between the community and the Tanzania Prisons Service. Mavunde reiterated the importance of partnerships like these in creating a positive impact on the lives of inmates.

Machinga Complex market shines bright: 24-hour operation to spark economic growth

The Dar es Salaam City Council has taken significant steps to implement Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa’s directive to install streetlights in key areas of the city, which aims to facilitate round-the-clock business operations, improve security, and enhance the city’s economic potential.

On December 28, 2024, Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo inaugurated 21 newly installed streetlights at the renowned Machinga Complex market valued at TZS 63.7 million, the installation seeks to transform the market into a 24-hour business hub. 

“Let me make this clear: starting today, after inaugurating these lights, there’s no wasting time. Business at this market will now run 24 hours. What’s encouraging is that we have a police station in this area, ensuring enhanced security,” Commissioner Mpogolo emphasized during the inauguration. 

The Machinga Complex, constructed to provide a conducive environment for small-scale traders and reduce city congestion, has struggled with underutilization. 

This new development is expected to address those challenges by extending operational hours and improving service delivery for vendors and customers alike. The strategic location and modern infrastructure of the complex position it as a vital economic hub for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

In addition to the Machinga Complex, the government has installed 33 streetlights worth TZS 136.29 million around the Kariakoo market, another critical economic zone in Dar es Salaam. These lights are complemented by security cameras, further boosting safety at the international marketplace. 

This integrated approach reflects the government’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to trade and commerce.

Local residents and business operators have welcomed the streetlight installation, citing its potential to extend working hours and boost incomes. 

“With these lights, we can now keep our shops open for longer hours without worrying about security. This will definitely improve our earnings,” said one Kariakoo trader. 

Many echoed this sentiment, expressing optimism about the initiative’s economic impact.

The streetlight installation project stems from Prime Minister Majaliwa’s broader directive to eliminate poorly lit areas in Dar es Salaam’s five districts. The initiative aims to curb crime, enhance public safety, and improve the city’s appeal as a business and residential hub.

During a recent visit to the region, Prime Minister Majaliwa underscored the importance of 24-hour operations at the Machinga Complex. 

He noted that maximizing the market’s potential would significantly boost trade activities, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the city’s revenue. 

“Round-the-clock operations will enable vendors to better cater to diverse customer needs, including those who shop outside traditional hours,” he stated.

Majaliwa also highlighted the broader economic benefits of extended operational hours, emphasizing their role in fostering economic growth. He urged local government authorities to collaborate with stakeholders to ensure that the necessary security and logistical support is in place. 

“This is a joint effort. We need everyone on board to make this a success—from government officials to traders and law enforcement agencies,” he said.

The Machinga Complex’s transformation into a 24-hour market aligns with the government’s agenda to promote inclusive economic growth. 

Despite its modern facilities, the complex has faced challenges with occupancy and utilization since its establishment. Addressing these issues, Prime Minister Majaliwa reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting vendors and creating an enabling environment for their businesses to thrive.

The Kariakoo market, known for its bustling trade and vibrant atmosphere, is also expected to benefit significantly from the lighting project. As one of the city’s largest and busiest markets, Kariakoo plays a crucial role in the supply chain for goods and services.

Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda delivered a heartfelt opening message, welcoming the show to the region and highlighting its broader significance.

Earlier this year, on September 28, 2024, Arusha Regional Commissioner Paul Makonda met with renowned Kenyan comedian Daniel Ndambuki, popularly known as Churchill. 

The two discussed plans to collaborate on a special program aimed at promoting acting and comedy talent in Arusha.

Churchill, who has been active in the comedy industry since 1996, is highly regarded for discovering and nurturing young talent across East Africa through initiatives like “Top Comic,” which involves over 20 expert trainers. 

His platform has provided opportunities for hundreds of young people to showcase their talents.

Hon. Makonda also announced plans for the December Churchill Show event in Arusha, underscoring his mission to ensure the economic prosperity of Arusha residents through their talents. 

"Every person has a unique gift from God, and as part of the regional government, our role is to create an environment where the youth of our region can use their talents to build their lives and their economy. The Churchill Show is one of the largest programs in Africa and the world, transforming lives and nurturing the talents of many young people. Now, it is Arusha's turn," said Hon. Makonda.
